MUAR, Malaysia — IHG Hotels & Resorts has signed voco Muar, introducing the first international-branded hotel to the Johor riverside town through a partnership with KCC Hotel (Muar) Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Malaysian real estate developer KCC Holdings Group. Announced on 6 August 2026, the project expands the voco brand into another Malaysian destination while supporting IHG's strategy of growing its presence in secondary and tertiary markets with strong commercial potential.
The hotel is currently in the advanced stages of construction, with interior design works underway ahead of its planned opening later this year. Once operational, the property will offer 107 guestrooms within KCC City Business Park, a mixed-use development owned and developed by KCC Holdings Group.
The signing represents IHG's first property in Muar and establishes the town's first internationally branded hotel. Located in Johor, Muar has developed a reputation for its cultural heritage, historical attractions, riverside setting and local cuisine while also serving as one of Malaysia's key manufacturing hubs. Alongside domestic leisure demand, the destination benefits from business travel generated by manufacturing activities and regional commercial connections.
Positioning the project within KCC City Business Park also aligns the hotel with an established commercial district, providing accommodation and meeting facilities for corporate travellers while expanding hospitality infrastructure in the area. The location is approximately a 40-minute drive from Malacca, increasing accessibility for visitors travelling between key destinations in southern Malaysia.
The addition of voco Muar forms part of IHG's broader expansion strategy for its premium portfolio. The company identified Muar as one of several high-potential destinations beyond Malaysia's primary gateway cities, following growth across locations including Kuching, Kota Kinabalu, Penang and Kuantan.
Voco has become IHG's fastest-growing premium hotel brand globally. The brand focuses on combining distinctive property character with consistent operational standards across its portfolio while maintaining a premium positioning designed to appeal to both leisure and corporate travellers.
For business development, the signing extends the brand into a market where international accommodation has previously been absent. The project also expands IHG's network in Malaysia as the company continues increasing its footprint across multiple hospitality segments.
Vivek Bhalla, Managing Director, South East Asia & Korea at IHG, said the signing reflects the company's strategy to expand into Malaysia's high-growth secondary and tertiary markets as travel demand increasingly extends beyond primary gateway cities.
He said destinations such as Muar combine cultural heritage, economic activity and leisure attractions, creating opportunities for hospitality investment. He also described voco as the company's fastest-growing premium brand, noting that its combination of individual character, commercial performance and broad guest appeal makes it suitable for markets such as Muar.
Bhalla added that the partnership with KCC Holdings will introduce a hospitality offering designed around the voco brand experience when the hotel opens later this year.
The project also represents an expansion milestone for KCC Holdings Group, integrating an internationally recognised hospitality brand into its KCC City Business Park development.
Mr. Ker Soon Yong, Executive Director of KCC Hotel (Muar) Sdn Bhd, said the partnership introduces the first international-branded hotel to Muar while supporting both business and leisure travel through its location within the company's business park.
He said the timing allows the company to introduce a hotel that combines international hospitality standards with the local identity of Muar. He also noted that the voco brand brings together international hotel operations with local character, supported by IHG's global hospitality expertise.
When completed, voco Muar will include several facilities designed to support corporate events, meetings and premium accommodation requirements. These include food and beverage outlets, meeting and function spaces, an infinity pool, a fitness gym and a grand ballroom.
The inclusion of event and meeting facilities expands the property's role beyond accommodation by providing venues capable of serving conferences, corporate functions and business gatherings within Muar. Combined with the hotel's location inside KCC City Business Park, these facilities position the development to support commercial activities alongside hospitality demand.
The signing also contributes to the continuing international expansion of the voco brand. Globally, voco hotels now operates 137 hotels, with recent additions across Asia including voco Bangkok Surawong in Thailand, voco Bandung Setiabudi in Indonesia and voco Scenia Bay Nha Trang in Vietnam.
Malaysia has also become an increasingly important market for the brand. Voco Muar will become IHG's second voco hotel in the country, following the opening of voco Kuching in June 2026, marking another stage in the company's premium brand rollout across the Malaysian market.
Beyond the voco portfolio, IHG continues expanding its broader hotel network throughout Malaysia. The company currently operates 13 hotels across the country while maintaining eight additional properties in its development pipeline. Future openings will also introduce the Regent and Vignette Collection brands into Malaysia, further diversifying IHG's presence across multiple market segments.
The agreement with KCC Holdings reflects continued collaboration between international hotel operators and domestic real estate developers to expand hospitality capacity in emerging commercial destinations. By integrating an internationally branded premium hotel within an established business park, the project combines accommodation, meeting infrastructure and lifestyle facilities in support of growing corporate and regional travel demand.
Scheduled to open later this year, voco Muar will introduce the town's first international hotel brand while expanding IHG's premium portfolio in Malaysia and strengthening the company's strategy of entering high-potential regional markets through partnerships with local developers.
