Thailand ends 53-year alcohol sales ban to spur holiday tourism

The new rule will now allow consumers to purchase liquor from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Thailand has lifted its 53-year-old ban on retail alcohol sales between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m., a move aimed at boosting tourism and year-end holiday spending in bars and convenience stores.

The nationwide change will run on a 180-day trial basis, after which officials will evaluate its impact. Under the revised rules, alcohol sales are permitted from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., and 5 p.m. to midnight.

The restrictions do not apply to international airport terminals serving departing or arriving passengers, licensed entertainment venues operating within legal hours, or hotels covered under the Hotel Act.

The Royal Gazette also issued related announcements outlining prohibited hours for alcohol consumption and detailing criteria for issuing warnings, ordering corrective measures and suspending alcohol advertising.
