Bali governor to ban Airbnb accommodations across the island
The governor said that Airbnb accommodations are disrupting Bali’s regional income and tourism performance.
Bali Governor I Wayan Koster plans to put a stop to Airbnb accommodation in Bali as it negatively impacts regional income.
According to him, while tourist visits have increased, they are not in line with the occupancy rate of hotels in Bali, especially those under the Perhimpunan Hotel dan Restoran Indonesia (PHRI) Bali association.
PHRI Bali Chairperson Tjok Oka Artha Ardana Sukawati added that the organization currently has 378 members, and that number is not comparable to the accommodations that carry out online marketing, which are estimated to reach 16,000 units.
In addition, Koster said that there are over 2,000 unlicensed hotels and villas in Bali that need to be regulated. He also noted that the Airbnb practice is carried out by foreigners who rent out residents' homes and then re-market them as daily rentals through the digital platform.
"Airbnb isn't fully supporting Bali's local economy; that's what's happening now. Not to mention those that are illegal and unscrupulous. We will take action against them, with no mercy. We must work together; it's not just the government's responsibility, it's all ours," Koster said.
