WalterMart hospitality, retail properties to transition to clean energy with First Gen

By year-end, 25 of WalterMart’s 45 community malls will be powered by solar energy through the partnership.

The WalterMart and Abenson Group of Companies have partnered with First Gen Corporation (First Gen) to transition its electricity requirements to geothermal power.

Under the agreement, First Gen will supply 47 megawatts (MW) of geothermal power for 47 WalterMart malls, including its W Department Store, WalterMart Supermarket, and Abenson stores across Metro Manila, central, and southern Luzon.

It also includes the WalterMart Group-owned Citadines Bay City Manila Hotel in Pasay City and the Ascott Bonifacio Global City Manila.

First Gen will source the geothermal power from Unified Leyte Geothermal Power Plant, which is owned and operated by its subsidiary, Energy Development Corporation.

The partnership will bring solar power facilities to 25 of its 45 community malls across the Philippines by the end of the year. These facilities will have a total capacity of 27-megawatt peak (MWp), in line with its goal to source 20% of its electricity needs from solar by end-2025.

“The commitment to clean power enables our malls to operate responsibly and efficiently, reducing our carbon footprint while creating a greener future for the communities we serve. Together, we are proving that progress and sustainability can go hand in hand,” said Abraham Uypeckcuat, Chairman of WM Shopping Center Management, Inc.
