Langham Opens Bangkok Heritage Asset for Luxury Business Expansion

HONG KONG — Langham Hospitality Group has officially opened reservations for The Langham, Custom House, Bangkok, with guest stays commencing from 20 December 2026, marking a significant addition to Thailand's luxury hospitality landscape through the adaptive reuse of one of Bangkok's most historically significant landmarks.

Located along the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok's Bang Rak District, the 75-key luxury hotel represents Langham Hospitality Group's latest premium hospitality development, centred around the restoration of the city's historic Custom House, originally established in 1888 during the reign of King Rama V. Once regarded as Thailand's gateway to the world, the landmark is being repositioned as a hospitality destination while preserving its architectural and cultural significance.

The project expands Langham Hospitality Group's luxury portfolio by combining heritage conservation with contemporary hotel development. Managed by the company, the property has been designed as an urban riverside retreat that integrates understated luxury with its surrounding historic environment, reinforcing the group's presence within Southeast Asia's premium hospitality market.

The hotel comprises 60 guestrooms and 15 suites, housed in a newly constructed contemporary building positioned adjacent to the restored Custom House. Rather than recreating the historic complex in its original form, the development adopts an architectural approach that acknowledges the site's historical legacy while adapting it for modern hospitality operations.

The contemporary structure was designed by Smith Obayawat, Founder and Principal of Thai architecture practice OBA. Its curvilinear form reflects the movement of the Chao Phraya River while complementing the adjacent heritage building. The architectural concept positions the restored Custom House as the "grandfather" and the new structure as the "grandson," creating a relationship between historic preservation and contemporary development.

Interior design throughout the guestrooms and suites incorporates residential-style elements alongside modern amenities. Accommodation overlooks landscaped courtyards, Bangkok's skyline, or the riverfront, with natural materials, soft lighting, and subtle Siamese design influences contributing to the property's overall aesthetic.

Design elements throughout the accommodations also reference Thailand's cultural heritage. Sculptural bathtubs enclosed in brushed metal draw inspiration from materials associated with prestige during the reign of King Rama V, including coinage and gilded finishes. Geometric detailing reflects rhombus mosaic patterns commonly found in Thai temples, traditional architecture, and sculpture, while bespoke lighting subtly interprets royal symbols and ceremonial weaponry.

Within the suites, these heritage references are expanded to convey the grandeur historically associated with Thai nobility. Contemporary craftsmanship is combined with The Langham brand's established design language and modern guest amenities, creating accommodation that bridges historical inspiration with present-day luxury hospitality standards.

Beyond guestrooms, the property introduces additional premium facilities that strengthen its positioning within Bangkok's luxury hotel segment. These include Chuan Spa, Langham's wellness brand inspired by the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and a state-of-the-art fitness centre equipped with Technogym's luxury Sandstone collection, representing the first installation of the equipment line in Asia.

A key feature of the development is the adaptive reuse of the original Custom House and its adjoining heritage buildings. Rather than functioning as accommodation, these restored structures have been designated as public spaces intended to serve both hotel guests and visitors.

The revitalised heritage buildings will become gathering spaces anchored by a portfolio of dining, drinking, and lifestyle venues. While specific concepts have yet to be announced, the hospitality offering will be introduced as part of the property's phased opening.

The hotel's food and beverage programme will include the Bangkok location of Hong Kong's three-Michelin-starred T'ang Court restaurant, alongside additional dining and drinking concepts. The inclusion of an internationally recognised restaurant brand further expands the property's positioning within Bangkok's luxury hospitality and culinary sectors.

Bob van den Oord, Chief Executive Officer of Langham Hospitality Group, said the transformation reflects the historical significance of the landmark while introducing a new chapter for the property.

He noted that for generations, the Custom House served as Thailand's gateway to the world and is now preparing to welcome international visitors once again as part of The Langham, Custom House, Bangkok. He added that the guestrooms, suites, and hospitality facilities have been designed to provide an intimate luxury experience that reflects both the distinctive character of the historic site and The Langham's approach to hospitality.

From a business development perspective, the project expands Langham Hospitality Group's portfolio through the redevelopment of an existing heritage asset rather than a conventional greenfield hotel project. The approach combines preservation, contemporary architecture, luxury accommodation, wellness facilities, and destination dining within a single integrated hospitality development.

The location also places the property within one of Bangkok's established tourism and commercial districts. Guests will have access to major destinations including Asiatique The Riverfront, ICONSIAM, Bangkok's Chinatown, and the galleries, cafés, and creative venues of Charoen Krung, providing connectivity to cultural, retail, and lifestyle attractions surrounding the Chao Phraya River.

The hotel will further differentiate its guest experience through bespoke transportation services, including private river journeys and chauffeured Bentley transfers, complementing its riverside setting and premium positioning.

Reservations are now open for arrivals beginning 20 December 2026, ahead of the hotel's official debut as Langham Hospitality Group continues expanding its international luxury portfolio. The opening also marks the return of the historic Custom House to public use through a hospitality-led redevelopment that preserves one of Bangkok's landmark buildings while introducing new commercial, dining, wellness, and accommodation offerings under The Langham brand.

Langham Hospitality Group, a wholly owned subsidiary of Great Eagle Holdings Limited, currently operates and develops more than 40 hotels, resorts, and residences across Asia, Europe, North America, Australasia, and the Middle East through brands including The Langham Hotels and Resorts, Cordis Hotels and Resorts, Eaton, and Ying'nFlo. The addition of The Langham, Custom House, Bangkok further strengthens the group's international luxury portfolio while expanding its presence in Thailand through a heritage-led hospitality development.
