Marriott International has expanded its presence in Japan’s resort market with the opening of Courtyard by Marriott Okinawa Resort, marking the first appearance of the Courtyard by Marriott brand in Okinawa and further strengthening the company’s footprint in the country’s southernmost prefecture.
Announced by Courtyard by Marriott, part of Marriott Bonvoy’s portfolio of more than 30 hotel brands, the new beachfront property is located in Nago along Kise Beach, overlooking Nago Bay in northern Okinawa. The opening adds 170 guestrooms and suites to Marriott International’s portfolio in a destination recognized for its Ryukyuan cultural heritage, marine attractions, and access to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Yambaru National Park.
The development represents a strategic brand expansion for Marriott International in a market that attracts millions of domestic and international visitors annually. Situated approximately 72 kilometers from Naha International Airport, the resort is accessible within about one hour by car, positioning it to serve both leisure and corporate travelers visiting the region.
“Okinawa has long captured the imagination of travelers, and we are delighted to bring Courtyard by Marriott to this extraordinary island for the first time,” said Cristiano Rinaldi, Chief Lodging Product & Services Officer – Asia Pacific excluding China, Marriott International.
Rinaldi noted that the brand is positioned to accommodate both business and leisure demand while connecting guests with Okinawa’s distinct culture, coastline, and island lifestyle.
The opening contributes to Marriott International’s broader growth strategy in Japan, where international hotel companies continue to expand branded accommodation offerings in key tourism and business destinations. By introducing the Courtyard by Marriott brand to Okinawa, Marriott adds a new select-service resort option to its regional portfolio while increasing brand representation in one of Japan’s most established resort markets.
The resort occupies a beachfront location near several notable attractions and business-generating leisure facilities. Guests have access to the Busena Marine Park Underwater Observatory, where visitors can view Okinawa’s marine ecosystem and coral reefs from an underwater observation tower. The property is also located a short drive from Kanehide Kise Country Club, which features two championship golf courses. Nearby access to Yambaru National Park further strengthens the destination’s appeal for domestic and international visitors.
From a design perspective, the project was created by Japanese architectural firm Kume Sekkei. The hotel’s concept draws inspiration from Okinawa’s western coastline, incorporating references to the turquoise waters of “Nago Blue” and the sandy shoreline of Kise Beach. Floor-to-ceiling windows throughout the property were designed to connect interior spaces with the surrounding landscape, while guestrooms and public areas emphasize functionality and contemporary styling associated with the Courtyard by Marriott brand.
The resort offers 170 guestrooms and suites designed to accommodate a range of traveler segments. Ocean View Rooms include private balconies facing the sea, while Mountain View Rooms overlook the surrounding natural environment. Many guestrooms can accommodate up to four guests, supporting family and group travel demand. Suites feature larger living areas designed for both productivity and relaxation, with views of the ocean and sunset. Selected suite configurations also include bunk beds intended for families and group travelers.
Food and beverage operations are centered around two venues. Shioka, the all-day dining restaurant, serves a combination of international cuisine and Okinawan-inspired dishes. The venue offers indoor and terrace seating and hosts daily breakfast, lunch, and dinner service. The Lounge and bar provide additional social and meeting space overlooking the ocean, featuring a selection of beverages including cocktails inspired by Okinawan ingredients.
The property’s recreational offering is anchored by Marine Club Berry, which provides access to a range of marine activities including snorkeling, diving, flyboarding, and stand-up paddleboarding. Programs are available for beginners, families, and experienced participants, supported by trained instructors. Additional facilities include a 24-hour fitness center equipped with cardio and weight-training equipment.
Family-oriented amenities are also integrated into the resort’s operating model through the Treehouse Kids’ Club. The facility includes a children’s library, educational toys, activity spaces, and a ball pool designed for recreation and social interaction.
Beyond accommodation and leisure facilities, the resort includes dedicated meetings, events, and wedding infrastructure that broadens its commercial potential. Coral, the property’s event venue, is located on the tenth floor and spans 210 square meters. The space features natural daylight, 180-degree ocean views, and audiovisual technology including projection and sound systems. The venue is designed to accommodate corporate meetings, private functions, and celebrations.
Wedding facilities include a chapel located on the second floor, where ceremonies can be held in a beachfront island setting. Following ceremonies, receptions and related events can be hosted within Coral, supported by catering services and the hotel’s events team.
The inclusion of dedicated event space provides Marriott with an additional revenue-generating component beyond room inventory, allowing the property to target meetings, celebrations, and group business segments alongside traditional transient demand.
“We are excited to welcome guests to Courtyard by Marriott Okinawa Resort, envisioned to reflect the relaxed spirit and natural beauty of Okinawa,” said Sam Chia, Multi-Property General Manager, Courtyard by Marriott Okinawa.
Chia added that the property combines the service standards associated with the Courtyard by Marriott brand with an experience designed around Okinawa’s distinctive destination appeal.
The launch of Courtyard by Marriott Okinawa Resort adds a new branded beachfront asset to Marriott International’s portfolio in Japan while expanding the reach of the Courtyard by Marriott brand into a market known for strong visitor demand, marine tourism, golf travel, and destination events. The development also strengthens Marriott’s resort network in Okinawa through a combination of accommodation, dining, recreation, and event facilities positioned to serve multiple traveler segments and business opportunities.
