Capella Hotel Group Strengthens Southeast Asia Leadership With Regional GM

News Southeast Asia
SINGAPORE — Capella Hotel Group has expanded its leadership structure in Southeast Asia with the appointment of Christian Westbeld as Regional General Manager, Southeast Asia, a move that places one executive in charge of three strategic luxury properties across Singapore, Indonesia, and Vietnam while reinforcing the group's operational leadership in one of its core markets.
The appointment was announced by Capella Hotel Group on June 30, 2026. In his new role, Westbeld will oversee Capella Singapore, Capella Ubud, and Capella Hanoi, while also assuming leadership of Capella Singapore, the company's flagship property that has represented the brand since its opening in 2009.
The appointment comes as Capella continues to strengthen regional coordination across its luxury portfolio in Southeast Asia. By assigning oversight of multiple properties to a single regional executive, the company is positioning its operations to leverage market expertise, leadership continuity, and closer collaboration across destinations.
Westbeld brings more than 25 years of hospitality experience spanning four continents. Originally from Frankfurt, Germany, his career has included operational and executive leadership positions across food and beverage, hotel management, and integrated resort operations.
His professional journey includes leadership roles with Raffles Hotels & Resorts in Dubai, Beijing, and Singapore before moving into senior operational responsibilities at MGM China's integrated resorts. In 2017, he returned to Raffles Singapore as General Manager, later serving as Managing Director of the landmark property while also holding responsibilities as Regional General Manager for Raffles Indonesia.
Among his most significant assignments was overseeing the restoration, relaunch, and repositioning of Raffles Singapore. The transformation was described as one of the region's most significant heritage restoration projects within the hospitality industry, involving the reopening of one of Asia's best-known luxury hotels following extensive refurbishment.
That experience managing a heritage luxury asset aligns with Capella's positioning, where several properties integrate historical architecture with contemporary hospitality design.
As Regional General Manager, Westbeld's responsibilities now extend beyond individual hotel management to regional operational oversight covering three luxury destinations in Southeast Asia.
Capella Singapore serves as the group's flagship property and remains one of its highest-profile assets. Located on Sentosa Island, the hotel occupies 30 acres of tropical grounds and rainforest while combining restored Tanah Merah colonial buildings dating back to the 1800s with modern architectural elements designed by Norman Foster.
The property comprises 113 guestrooms and suites, complemented by 10 private manors featuring plunge pools in both colonial and contemporary styles. The hotel also includes 81 serviced residences ranging from one-bedroom suites to three-bedroom duplexes, together with multiple food-and-beverage venues and event facilities that support both leisure and business demand.
Capella Singapore has maintained several international hospitality recognitions, including being named to Condé Nast Traveler's Gold List this year while retaining Forbes Five-Star status for 14 consecutive years.
Beyond managing the Singapore flagship, Westbeld will also oversee Capella Ubud in Indonesia and Capella Hanoi in Vietnam, giving him responsibility for operational leadership across three luxury destinations serving distinct regional markets.
The regional structure consolidates leadership across Southeast Asia at a time when luxury hospitality companies continue expanding multi-property management models designed to enhance operational consistency while preserving each property's local identity.
Capella Hotel Group said Westbeld's leadership philosophy centres on placing people before process. Throughout his career, he has focused on building relationships with both guests and colleagues while maintaining a hands-on operational approach within each property.
According to the company, that management style has shaped how he develops teams, spending significant time working directly with hotel employees and day-to-day operations. The approach emphasises cultivating service culture and fostering a sense of belonging while anticipating guest and operational needs before they arise.
The appointment also reflects Capella's emphasis on leadership experience within the Singapore market. Westbeld has spent several years managing luxury hospitality operations in the city-state and has developed longstanding relationships across the local hospitality sector through successive executive positions.
Roland Fasel, President of Capella Hotel Group, said Westbeld brings a combination of market knowledge, operational discipline, and familiarity with the Capella brand.
Fasel also noted that Westbeld's understanding of the Singapore market and industry relationships complements the company's people-focused hospitality philosophy, describing his appointment as a new chapter for both the executive and Capella Singapore.
The expanded regional leadership role also places Capella Singapore at the centre of the company's Southeast Asian operations. Since opening in 2009, the property has served as the flagship hotel for the Capella brand and remains one of its most established assets.
The appointment demonstrates how Capella Hotel Group continues aligning executive leadership across multiple markets while maintaining direct oversight of key luxury properties in Singapore, Indonesia, and Vietnam. By combining responsibility for regional operations with management of its flagship hotel, the company is integrating strategic leadership with day-to-day operational execution across three destinations within its Southeast Asia portfolio.
Capella Hotel Group currently operates two luxury brands—Capella Hotels and Resorts and Patina Hotels & Resorts—from its Singapore headquarters. Its portfolio focuses on transforming heritage properties into luxury hospitality destinations, with future developments planned across the Middle East and Europe. Within the Capella Hotels and Resorts brand, the company continues expanding its presence across Asia Pacific while maintaining an emphasis on heritage preservation, personalised service, and destination-specific experiences.
