AirAsia Group Berhad and the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) have reinforced their long-standing collaboration by signing a three-year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) aimed at accelerating tourism growth, strengthening regional connectivity, and expanding Thailand's position as one of Southeast Asia's leading travel destinations. The agreement, announced on 10 July 2026 in Kuala Lumpur, was witnessed by the Prime Minister of Thailand and will remain in effect from 2026 to 2029.
The collaboration reflects a joint strategy to increase visitor arrivals while improving travel accessibility across the region through coordinated destination marketing, route development, and market intelligence sharing. According to AirAsia Group Berhad, the partnership is designed to leverage the strengths of both organizations to promote Thailand across key regional markets while supporting broader tourism development objectives.
Under the agreement, AirAsia and TAT will implement integrated promotional initiatives across marketing, communications, and tourism platforms to strengthen Thailand's destination visibility. The collaboration also includes coordinated efforts to promote both existing and future air routes, alongside the exchange of market insights that will help both organizations better understand changing travel patterns and identify new tourism opportunities.
The partnership places connectivity at the center of tourism development. AirAsia Group currently operates 123 weekly flights between Malaysia and Thailand through AirAsia Malaysia (AK) and Thai AirAsia (FD), serving eight direct routes that connect major cities in both countries. From Kuala Lumpur, the airline operates services to Bangkok (Don Mueang), Chiang Mai, Phuket, Krabi, and Hat Yai. Additional connections include Penang to Bangkok (Don Mueang) and Phuket, as well as Johor Bahru to Bangkok (Don Mueang). The existing network provides direct access between multiple Malaysian gateways and key Thai destinations, supporting travel demand across leisure and business markets.
The agreement also supports future route promotion as both organizations seek to strengthen regional accessibility. By combining AirAsia's aviation network with TAT's destination marketing capabilities, the collaboration aims to encourage greater travel flows while enhancing Thailand's competitiveness within the regional tourism landscape.
As ASEAN's leading airline group, AirAsia will use its extensive route network and digital ecosystem to promote Thailand to millions of travelers across the region. The initiative supports TAT's "Amazing Thailand, Feel All the Feelings" campaign, highlighting Thailand's cultural experiences, hospitality sector, and diverse tourism offerings. Through its digital platforms and marketing reach, AirAsia will work alongside TAT to increase destination awareness across multiple source markets.
The partnership also incorporates the exchange of market intelligence between both organizations. By sharing insights into traveler behavior and evolving tourism trends, AirAsia and TAT intend to identify emerging opportunities that can support future tourism development initiatives and improve the effectiveness of destination marketing campaigns.
Farouk Kamal, Deputy Group Chief Executive Officer of AirAsia Group Berhad, said Thailand has remained one of the airline group's most important markets, with the collaboration reflecting a shared ambition to make travel more accessible while supporting the sustainable growth of Thailand's tourism industry.
He also highlighted continued demand between Malaysia and Thailand, noting that AirAsia transported more than one million guests between the two countries during the first half of 2026. The passenger volume demonstrates sustained travel demand across one of the group's key regional markets and provides a foundation for expanding tourism promotion under the new agreement.
Building on that performance, the airline plans to support additional visitor arrivals through coordinated marketing campaigns, enhanced connectivity, and destination promotion initiatives developed jointly with TAT. The partnership combines AirAsia's transportation network with tourism marketing activities intended to increase Thailand's visibility across regional audiences.
Beyond supporting inbound tourism, the collaboration is structured to strengthen two-way travel between Malaysia and Thailand. The agreement aligns Thailand's tourism promotion efforts with Malaysia's Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) initiative through 2027, creating opportunities for both destinations to benefit from increased regional travel activity. The alignment also reflects broader efforts to strengthen tourism cooperation within ASEAN by improving accessibility between neighboring markets.
The three-year framework enables both organizations to coordinate destination marketing over a longer planning horizon while supporting tourism demand through integrated campaigns, route promotion, and market engagement activities. AirAsia's route network, digital ecosystem, and marketing capabilities will complement TAT's destination expertise as both parties work toward increasing tourism visibility and expanding regional travel.
The partnership comes as connectivity continues to play a central role in destination competitiveness across Southeast Asia. Direct flight availability, coordinated destination promotion, and cross-border tourism collaboration remain important components of regional tourism development strategies. Through the agreement, AirAsia and TAT will combine aviation connectivity with destination marketing to support visitor growth across priority markets while strengthening Thailand's tourism positioning within ASEAN.
The collaboration also establishes a framework for ongoing cooperation through 2029, allowing both organizations to coordinate promotional activities while responding to evolving market conditions. In addition to supporting existing routes, the agreement includes collaboration on promoting new services as they become available, expanding travel options between Malaysia and Thailand.
By integrating marketing initiatives, communications activities, tourism platforms, and market intelligence, AirAsia and the Tourism Authority of Thailand aim to strengthen tourism demand, improve regional accessibility, and support sustainable tourism growth through enhanced connectivity. The partnership further reinforces the relationship between the airline group and Thailand's national tourism authority while advancing Thailand's "Amazing Thailand, Feel All the Feelings" campaign alongside Malaysia's Visit Malaysia 2026 initiative, using coordinated destination promotion, aviation capacity, and regional travel networks to encourage continued tourism growth across Southeast Asia.
