Accor Expands Malaysia Pipeline With Mercure Living Genting Highlands

News Malaysia
PETALING JAYA, Malaysia — According to a press release issued by Accor, the global hospitality group has signed a hotel management agreement with Tropicana Corporation Berhad to introduce Mercure Living Genting Highlands, an extended-stay branded hospitality development scheduled to open in 2028. The agreement combines Accor's international hospitality platform with Tropicana's township development strategy, marking another step in both companies' efforts to expand recurring hospitality revenue and branded residential offerings in Malaysia.

The project will be integrated into TwinPines Serviced Suites at Tropicana Grandhill, a wellness-focused precinct within the 596-acre Tropicana WindCity township in Genting Highlands. Once completed, Mercure Living Genting Highlands will comprise 1,443 fully furnished suites, adding a significant number of keys to Accor's Malaysian development pipeline while strengthening Tropicana's hospitality portfolio.

The agreement represents a business collaboration between an international hotel operator and one of Malaysia's established property developers. For Accor, the development expands its extended-stay portfolio in a market where demand continues to evolve beyond traditional hotel accommodation. For Tropicana, the partnership aligns with its strategy to diversify income through professionally managed hospitality assets while increasing the value proposition of its integrated township developments.

Mercure Living Genting Highlands will operate under Accor's Mercure Living brand, which focuses on longer-stay accommodation combining residential-style living with hotel services. The property will offer suites equipped with kitchen and dining facilities, targeting long-stay guests, leisure travellers and homeowners seeking professionally managed accommodation within an integrated development.

The development also forms part of Tropicana's broader vision for Tropicana WindCity, a township master plan spanning 596 acres across three freehold precincts. Located in the highland destination of Genting Highlands, the township integrates residential, hospitality, recreational and lifestyle components designed to support long-term community growth while enhancing the destination's appeal for both domestic and international visitors.

Under the management agreement, homeowners will gain access to Accor's global hospitality platform, including its international distribution network and ALL Accor, the company's hospitality loyalty programme. The collaboration is intended to combine residential ownership with professional hotel management, creating an operational framework supported by Accor's global standards and commercial ecosystem.

The branded hospitality concept also supports Tropicana's long-term business strategy of creating recurring income streams beyond conventional property development. By integrating an internationally recognised hospitality operator into TwinPines Serviced Suites, the company aims to strengthen the commercial positioning of the broader Tropicana WindCity development while offering professionally managed accommodation backed by a global brand.

Mercure Living Genting Highlands is scheduled to open in 2028 and will include a range of hospitality facilities alongside its residential-style suites. Planned amenities include an all-day dining restaurant, executive lounge, multipurpose function hall, heated swimming pool, fitness centre and additional lifestyle facilities designed to support longer stays.

The project has also been positioned within Tropicana Grandhill, described as the company's first green-certified development in Genting Highlands. The integration of Mercure Living into the project reflects both companies' focus on combining hospitality operations with sustainable township planning and wellness-oriented living environments.

Garth Simmons, Chief Operating Officer, Premium, Midscale & Economy Division, Accor Asia, said the project represents an opportunity to expand Accor's extended-stay offering in Malaysia through collaboration with one of the country's leading developers. He said changing traveller preferences increasingly favour accommodation that combines flexibility, comfort and local experiences, positioning the development to meet evolving market demand while contributing to Genting Highlands' continued growth as a leisure destination.

Ixora Ang, Managing Director of Marketing & Sales and Business Development at Tropicana, said the company has prioritised sustainability, long-term value creation and recurring income streams throughout its township developments. She added that integrating Mercure Living into TwinPines Serviced Suites reflects Tropicana's objective of delivering smart, sustainable and professionally managed branded residences by combining its township development expertise with Accor's global hospitality platform.

The partnership also reinforces the strategic role of branded residences and extended-stay products within the region's hospitality pipeline. Rather than functioning solely as accommodation for travellers, the development combines residential ownership with internationally managed hospitality operations, creating a hybrid model intended to generate operational value for property owners while expanding branded hospitality supply.

For Accor, the agreement further strengthens its presence in Malaysia, where the company currently operates 28 hotels representing more than 7,300 keys. The company also has 10 additional properties in its development pipeline, accounting for more than 2,600 keys. The addition of Mercure Living Genting Highlands increases that pipeline by another 1,443 keys, making it one of the larger hospitality developments currently planned within the country.

The project also expands the Mercure Living brand in Southeast Asia while reinforcing Accor's strategy of diversifying accommodation formats beyond conventional hotels. Extended-stay products have become an increasingly important segment within global hospitality as operators respond to travellers seeking residential amenities combined with professionally managed hotel services.

For Tropicana, the collaboration supports its broader property development portfolio, which has delivered more than 20 townships and over 20 green-certified developments across Malaysia since 1979. Through Tropicana WindCity, the company continues to integrate hospitality, residential, recreational and commercial components into master-planned communities designed for long-term growth.

Located within the cool climate of Genting Highlands, Mercure Living Genting Highlands is expected to serve as both a hospitality asset and a component of the wider township ecosystem. The project combines branded accommodation, residential ownership and international hotel management under a single operational model, supporting the expansion strategies of both Accor and Tropicana while adding new professionally managed inventory to Malaysia's hospitality market.
