Japan welcomed a total of 42.6 million foreign visitors in 2025, an increase of 15.8% year-over-year (YoY), setting a new record high, according to the latest estimates from the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO).

Seven markets, including South Korea and Thailand, set new single-month records, while 14 markets, including Taiwan, the United States, and Canada, recorded their highest-ever December numbers.
Australia also surpassed the one million mark for the first time, becoming the seventh market to exceed one million visitors for the year, following China, South Korea, Taiwan, the United States, Hong Kong, and Thailand. Overall, twenty markets recorded their highest-ever annual totals.
Early figures from January 2026 show continued growth, with visitors from South Korea and Taiwan in East Asia, Malaysia and Thailand in Southeast Asia, and the United States and Canada in North America driving the increase.
